Sales Tax Calculator
Add US sales tax to a price, or pull the tax out of a total — at your exact combined rate.
- Net amount
- $100.00
- sales tax (7.25%)
- $7.25
- Total (incl. sales tax)
- $107.25
Presets are state base rates — your combined rate adds county and city taxes on top. Enter your exact combined rate (from your state's revenue site or by ZIP code) for an accurate total.
How US sales tax works
There is no federal sales tax in the United States. Instead, each state sets its own rate, and counties and cities can add their own on top. The rate you charge is the combined rate for the location where the sale takes place — which is why two addresses a few miles apart can have different rates.
Because of that, this calculator asks you to enter your rate rather than guessing it. That keeps the result exact for your location instead of approximating it.
Adding vs removing sales tax
Add sales tax
Total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100). $100 at 8.25% → $108.25.
Remove sales tax (reverse)
Price = total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). $108.25 → $100 pre-tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by your combined sales tax rate and add it on: tax = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total = price + tax. On a $100 sale at a combined 8.25% rate, that's $8.25 tax and a $108.25 total. Enter your rate above and it calculates instantly.
What sales tax rate should I use?
US sales tax is the sum of a state rate plus any county and city (local) rates where the sale takes place, so your combined rate depends on the exact location. Combined rates commonly land between about 4% and 10%. Look up your precise rate on your state's Department of Revenue website, or by ZIP code, and enter that combined figure for an accurate result.
Is there a federal sales tax in the US?
No. Unlike VAT or GST, the United States has no national sales tax. Sales tax is set at the state level and topped up by local jurisdictions, which is why rates vary so much from one address to the next.
Which states have no sales tax?
Five states have no statewide sales tax — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (a useful way to remember them is the 'NOMAD' states). Note that Alaska has no state sales tax but permits local sales taxes, so some Alaskan cities still charge one.
How do I work out the tax from a tax-included total?
Switch the calculator to 'Remove sales tax'. It divides the total by (100 + rate) and multiplies by 100 to find the pre-tax price, and the remainder is the tax. This is useful when a receipt shows only the total and you need the tax portion for your books.
