About Bilto
A free invoice generator for people who bill their own clients.
What Bilto is
Bilto is a web-based invoice generator aimed at freelancers, sole traders, contractors and small businesses — the people who write their own invoices rather than running them through an accounts department. You fill in a guided form, choose a template, and download a professional PDF. No account is required, and nothing is watermarked or limited behind a paywall.
The tool supports invoicing rules for Australia, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and several other countries, including the tax fields each one expects: GST and an ABN in Australia, GSTIN and HSN codes in India, a VAT number in the UK and EU, and so on. Getting those details right is the difference between an invoice a client can claim a tax credit on and one their bookkeeper sends back.
How this site pays for itself
Bilto is funded by advertising. That is the whole model — there is no paid tier, no upsell, and no feature held back to push you toward one. We would rather be straightforward about this than have you wonder what the catch is.
In practice that means you will see ads on some pages. We keep them out of the invoice editor itself, because a tool you are trying to concentrate in is the wrong place for them. Advertising also has no influence on the guidance we publish: the tax content is written from the relevant authority's own rules, and no advertiser sees it before you do.
How the guidance is researched
A large part of this site is not the tool at all — it is written guidance on how to invoice correctly in a given country or trade. That content starts from the tax authority's published rules: the ATO in Australia, HMRC in the United Kingdom, IRAS in Singapore, the GST Council in India. Where a threshold or a required field is stated, we cite the specific figure rather than describing it vaguely, because the specific figure is the part that actually helps.
Two honest caveats. First, rules change, and a page written against last year's threshold can quietly go stale — if you spot one, please tell us. Second, general guidance cannot account for your particular circumstances. Nothing here is a substitute for an accountant who knows your situation, and for anything with real money attached you should confirm it with one.
Who runs Bilto
Bilto is an independent product, built and maintained by a small team rather than a large company. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any tax authority or accounting software vendor, including the ones we compare ourselves against.
You can reach us at hello@bilto.co, or through the contact page. Corrections to the tax and compliance content are the messages we act on fastest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bilto really free?
Yes. Every feature is free to use, with no account required to create and download an invoice. There is no trial period, no watermark on your PDF, and no export limit. The site is funded by advertising rather than subscriptions, which is why you will see ads on some pages.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can build an invoice and download it as a PDF without signing up. An account is optional and exists so you can save clients, reuse past invoices, and keep a history in one place rather than re-entering details each time.
What happens to the invoice data I enter?
If you use Bilto without an account, your draft is held in your own browser's local storage so you do not lose work on refresh. It is not a copy we keep. If you create an account, your saved invoices are stored so you can return to them. Our privacy policy sets out the detail.
Is the tax guidance on this site professional advice?
No, and it should not be treated as such. We research each country's invoicing rules from the relevant tax authority's published guidance and cite the thresholds and requirements as we find them, but rules change and individual circumstances vary. For anything consequential, confirm with your accountant or the tax authority directly.
How do I report something that looks wrong?
Please tell us. Tax rules change and pages go stale, and a correction from someone who works with these rules daily is genuinely useful. You can reach us at hello@bilto.co, and corrections to compliance content are the messages we prioritise.
