Adding and removing 10% GST

Add GST

Price × 1.10. A$100 → A$10 GST → A$110 including GST.

Remove GST (divide by 11)

GST = total ÷ 11; net = total × 10 ÷ 11. A$110 → A$10 GST → A$100 before GST.

Australian prices to consumers are usually quoted GST-inclusive, so "remove GST" is the calculation businesses reach for most — to pull the GST out of a total for their BAS.

GST-free and input-taxed supplies

Not everything carries the 10%. GST-free supplies (0%) include most basic food, many medical and health services, most education, and exports. Input-taxed supplies, such as residential rent and financial supplies, also carry no GST but are treated differently for credits. For anything GST-free, use the 0% preset above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate GST in Australia?

Australian GST is a flat 10%. To add it, multiply the price by 10%: a $100 sale becomes $10 GST and $110 including GST. To find the GST inside a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 11 — because the GST is one-eleventh of a tax-inclusive amount. $110 ÷ 11 = $10 GST, leaving $100 before GST. The calculator above does both.

Why do you divide by 11 to get the GST?

Because GST is added at 10% of the price before tax, the tax-inclusive total is 110% of the net — that is, 11 tenths. So the GST portion is exactly one of those eleven parts: GST = total ÷ 11. It is the quickest way to pull GST out of a price that already includes it, and it is why Australian receipts can show the GST from the total alone.

What is the GST rate in Australia?

GST is 10% on most goods and services. Some supplies are GST-free (0%) — including most basic food, many medical and health services, most education, and exports — and some are input-taxed, such as residential rent and financial supplies. Use the 10% or 0% presets above depending on the supply.

Do I have to charge GST?

Only if you are registered for GST, which is compulsory once your GST turnover reaches A$75,000 (A$150,000 for non-profits), and optional below that. If you are not registered, you do not charge GST and you issue a plain invoice rather than a tax invoice. Our Australian tax invoice and no-GST guides cover this in detail.
